奉化博物馆是城市文化中心的一部分，主体建筑由原热电厂的发电车间改造而来，局部加建，保留部分热电厂的工业遗存，带有浓厚的工业风。总面积约10800平方米，展览区面积为6000平方米，属于一个大中型博物馆，主要由四部分组成：南部为博物馆前厅，中部、东部为主展厅，西北侧为藏品库房，西南侧为管理办公用房。博物馆展览区的设计，主楼一层是临时展厅、二层为奉化历史文明展厅、三层为蒋氏父子展厅与奉化展厅、四层为古籍展厅，副楼一、二层为书画展厅。
标志以英文首字母FHM组合而成，F是主体大厅，H是电厂烟囱，M是传送带，按照黄金比例设计而成，体现了博物馆建筑特征和现代简约的工业风格。
